Home extensions in Dubai, adding rooms, gyms, pools, or outdoor kitchens, add electrical load that existing supplies may not accommodate. A simple load calculation before design prevents nuisance tripping and rejected DEWA submissions.

What adds significant load

Additional AC units (3-5 kW each), pool pumps (1-3 kW), gym equipment (2-5 kW for treadmills), outdoor cooking (5-10 kW for griddles), and electric vehicle charging (7-22 kW).

When supply upgrade is needed

If new load brings the total above 80% of supply rating, supply upgrade should be planned. DEWA will assess and approve based on cable size, transformer capacity, and load factor.

Distribution board headroom

Even with adequate supply, the existing DB may lack spare ways. Adding a sub-DB for the extension is cleaner than crowding the main board.

Extension electrical planning

  • Calculate new connected and diversified load
  • Confirm DB spare way count before designing
  • Check supply rating headroom (target below 80%)
  • Plan for EV charging if relevant
  • Document the load schedule for DEWA submission

Why this matters

Electrical surprises during fit-out cost weeks; an hour with a licensed engineer up-front prevents them.
