Outdoor lighting installations, garden, facade, signage, pool, in Dubai require DEWA pre-approval for the electrical work and sometimes DM coordination for visual impact. Skipping pre-approval risks rework and fines.

What requires pre-approval

Any installation drawing power from the DEWA supply with new circuits, new distribution boards, or significant load increase. Plug-in landscape lighting on existing outdoor sockets typically does not require additional approval.

Documentation required

Single-line diagram, fixture cut sheets, load calculation, contractor licence, and earthing detail. IP rating must be appropriate to outdoor exposure and proximity to water.

Common compliance issues

IP-rated boxes used in name only (not properly sealed), insufficient earthing in damp conditions, transformers placed without ventilation, and missing RCD protection on outdoor circuits.

Outdoor lighting compliance points

  • Pre-approval before installation work begins
  • IP65 minimum for outdoor fixtures
  • IP67/68 for fixtures in or near water
  • RCD protection on all outdoor circuits
  • Earthing detail documented and tested
  • Transformer ventilation considered in enclosure design

Why this matters

Outdoor electrics meet weather, water, and curious children, compliance is a safety matter, not a paperwork one.
