Sound transmission between apartments is the most common neighbour complaint in Dubai. Renovations are the ideal time to add sound insulation, the cost is incremental and the benefit is large.
Where sound transmits
Ceilings (footfall and voice from above), walls (TV and conversation from adjoining units), floors (footfall to below), and ducts/pipes (sound flanking through services).
What actually works
Resilient mounting of plasterboard ceilings, mineral wool in stud walls, acoustic underlay under hard flooring, and isolation collars on penetrations. Mass and decoupling are the principles.
What does not work
Foam tiles on walls (decorative, minimal acoustic effect), thin underlays under hard floors, and any single-layer plasterboard improvement.
Apartment renovation acoustic essentials
- Resilient ceiling mounts where neighbours above are loud
- Mineral wool in any new stud walls
- Acoustic underlay under all hard flooring
- Isolation collars on duct and pipe penetrations
- Sealed perimeter on doors (where allowed)
- Acoustic-rated doors for bedrooms and home offices
Why this matters
Acoustic upgrades during renovation are 10x cheaper than after; the moment to do it is when walls are open.
