A Dubai balcony garden works when three problems are solved together: heat, wind and water. That means shade or screening on the exposed side, planters heavy or fixed enough not to move in spring winds, and drip irrigation on a timer so nothing depends on remembering to water in August.
Which way the balcony faces changes everything. A north-facing balcony is in shade for most of the day and will grow a far wider range of plants. West-facing takes the full afternoon sun and is the hardest, and generally needs shading before any planting is worth attempting. South and east sit between the two. We check orientation and the hours of direct sun before choosing a single plant.
Most Dubai towers restrict what can be fixed to the balcony structure, what may be visible from outside, and whether anything can be attached to the balustrade. Drilling into the balustrade or the facade is commonly prohibited. Everything we install for tenants is designed to be freestanding and reversible, so it comes out cleanly at the end of a tenancy and does not become a deduction at handover. We check your building rules before installing.
Bougainvillea and jasmine for colour and screening, herbs and chillies in the cooler months, snake plant and ZZ plant in shaded corners, succulents in full sun, and areca or bamboo palms where there is shelter. Anything with large soft leaves scorches quickly on an exposed Dubai balcony.
