Softscape & Planting Design in Dubai

Softscape is the living half of a garden, the trees, palms, shrubs, groundcover, lawns and flowering beds, and in Dubai it is the half that decides whether a garden still looks good in year three. We design and plant it around the two things that actually kill Dubai gardens: the wrong species for the heat, and soil and water that concentrate salt in the root zone. Get the softscape right and the hardscape has something worth framing.

What is softscape, and why it decides the garden

Hardscape is the built part, paving, walls, pergolas, pools. Softscape is everything alive. Most Dubai garden quotes describe the hardscape in detail and treat planting as an afterthought, which is exactly backwards, because the planting is what people see every day and what fails first when it is wrong. A softscape design starts from how the garden will be used and how much sun each part gets, then chooses species that will actually thrive there rather than species that look good on a mood board and die by August.

Why Dubai planting fails, and how to stop it

Two causes account for most of it. The first is species choice: a plant that suits a Mediterranean courtyard cooks in a Dubai summer, so the palette has to be built from heat-tolerant and adapted species with the delicate ones kept to shaded, controlled spots. The second is the root zone: Dubai gardens are often watered with recycled water that carries a higher salt load, and under high evaporation that salt concentrates in the soil, so the soil has to be prepared and managed and the irrigation set up to flush rather than just water. Design that ignores the water and the soil produces a garden that looks perfect at handover and tired within two summers.

A planting design that works in layers

A good scheme works in layers: shade trees and palms for structure and relief from the sun, large shrubs for screening and privacy, mid-height planting for colour and texture, and groundcover or lawn at the base. Each layer earns its place, and the maintenance load is designed in rather than discovered later, because a beautiful garden nobody can keep alive is not a success. Lawns are specified honestly against how the space is used and irrigated, and where a natural lawn will not survive the traffic or the water, the design says so.

Design and build, one team

We design the softscape, prepare the ground properly, supply and plant, set up the irrigation, and hand over a garden with a plan for keeping it alive, as one accountable team. That is the difference from a crew that lays turf and plants over unprepared ground and is gone before the salt shows.

Approvals, rules and what the law actually says

Authority requirements that can change

These come from the relevant authority but are revised from time to time. Treat them as a starting point and confirm the current position for your property before you rely on them.

  • Structural outdoor work at a Dubai villa needs an NOC from the master developer, such as Emaar, Nakheel or DAMAC, in addition to any Dubai Municipality approval, so that underground utilities and community sightlines are protected. (Source: Dubai Municipality, checked July 2026)
  • Emaar communities apply a setback to permanent structures including pergolas, gazebos and pools, commonly stated as 1.5 metres from the boundary wall. Confirm the current figure for your specific community before designing to it. (Source: Dubai Municipality, checked July 2026)
  • The Damas tree, Conocarpus lancifolius, is prohibited in Emaar communities and restricted more widely across Dubai because its root system damages underground pipework and community infrastructure. (Source: Dubai Municipality, checked July 2026)
  • Nakheel may carry out a Villa Status Report survey before approving new landscaping on its communities. Unapproved work left by a previous owner has to be regularised before new approval is granted. (Source: Dubai Municipality, checked July 2026)
  • Under the Al Safat green building system, Dubai Municipality expects new villa landscaping to use automated irrigation with rain sensors and efficient outdoor lighting. (Source: Al Safat Dubai Green Building System, checked July 2026)
  • Large Dubai landscapes are commonly irrigated with treated sewage effluent (TSE), recycled water delivered through a dedicated network rather than potable supply, as part of the emirate's water-conservation strategy. (Source: DEWA, checked August 2026)
  • Use of treated sewage effluent for irrigation is regulated and requires a permit from the competent Dubai authority specifying the approved use and quantity. (Source: Dubai Municipality, checked August 2026)

What we typically see in the market

These are observations from working in Dubai, not rules. No authority publishes them as requirements, and your own contract or community may differ.

  • Treated sewage effluent carries a higher salt content than potable water, and under Dubai's high evaporation those salts concentrate in the root zone over time, which is why plant selection and soil management matter for a garden irrigated this way. (Source: DEWA, checked August 2026)
  • Master developers typically charge a non-refundable engineering review fee for landscaping submissions, with the amount depending on whether the work is cosmetic or structural. Confirm the current fee with your community before submitting. (Source: Dubai Municipality, checked July 2026)

Frequently Asked Questions

Hardscape is the built part of a garden, paving, walls, pergolas and pools. Softscape is everything living, trees, palms, shrubs, lawns and beds. Softscape is what people see daily and what fails first if the species, soil or water are wrong, so we design it first.

Usually two reasons: species that cannot take the summer heat, and salt building up in the root zone from recycled irrigation water under high evaporation. We choose adapted species and prepare and manage the soil and irrigation so the planting survives.

Yes. We design the planting scheme, prepare the ground, supply and plant, set up the irrigation and hand over a maintenance plan, as one design-and-build team, rather than laying plants over unprepared ground.
