A natural lawn works in Dubai when three things are right: a grass species suited to heat and salinity, properly prepared ground rather than sand, and irrigation that can actually meet summer demand. Without all three a new lawn looks good for one winter and thins out through its first summer.
Paspalum is the usual choice for Dubai because it handles heat and tolerates saline water better than most alternatives, which matters where irrigation water is not fresh. Bermuda grasses are hard-wearing and cope well with sun but go dormant and brown in cooler months unless overseeded. Buffalo and similar broader-leaf grasses handle partial shade better than Bermuda. We match the species to sun exposure, water quality and how the lawn will actually be used.
Turf laid straight onto sand or compacted construction fill will fail, and this is by far the most common reason a new Dubai lawn disappoints. Proper preparation means removing or breaking up compacted layers, importing and blending topsoil with organic matter to a suitable depth, grading for drainage away from the building, and installing irrigation before the turf goes down rather than after.
Summer demand is high, and a lawn is the thirstiest element in most Dubai gardens. It needs its own zone rather than sharing a schedule with beds and trees, because their requirements are completely different. Watering should be deep and early in the morning; frequent light watering in the middle of the day mostly evaporates and encourages shallow roots.
Lawn is the highest-water, highest-maintenance element you can put in a Dubai garden. It needs mowing, feeding, aeration and consistent irrigation, and it will still look its worst in late summer. That is fine if the lawn is genuinely used by children or pets. If it is decorative only, a smaller lawn area with drought-tolerant planting around it usually gives a better garden for less running cost, and we will say so rather than sell the larger area.
