Xeriscaping is designing a garden around the climate it is actually in rather than fighting it. In Dubai that means drought-tolerant and native planting, gravel and rock in place of thirsty lawn, mulch to hold moisture in the soil, and efficient drip irrigation. The result uses a fraction of the water of a conventional lawn garden and needs far less maintenance.
A conventional lawn is the single largest water consumer in most Dubai villa gardens, and it is also the element that looks worst by August. Xeriscaping removes that dependency. It also reduces mowing, feeding and the constant replacement of plants that were never suited to the conditions in the first place. Dubai green building requirements under Al Sa'fat push new developments toward efficient irrigation and appropriate planting, so the approach aligns with where the regulation is heading rather than against it.
Native and well-adapted species do the work: ghaf, sidr, date palm, desert rose, bougainvillea, oleander, lantana, agave, aloe, yucca, ornamental grasses and a range of succulents. These have the leaf structure and root systems to handle heat and salinity. One important note: Conocarpus, the Damas tree, is widely restricted in Dubai because of its aggressive root system damaging pipework and structures, so we do not plant it and we will flag it if it is already in your garden.
The common objection is that xeriscaping looks stark. It does not have to. Layered planting, flowering drought-tolerant shrubs, specimen trees and considered hard landscaping produce a garden that reads as lush while using a fraction of the water. We usually keep a small, well-irrigated lawn area where children or pets need it and treat the rest as low water.
