The most expensive mistake in a Dubai garden is planting into ground nobody tested. Under the surface sit the things that decide whether the garden lives: salinity, drainage, compaction and what the soil is actually made of. A soil test and proper preparation cost a fraction of replanting a failed garden, and they are the step almost every quote leaves out.
Plants live or die below the surface. In Dubai the native ground is often sandy, saline and low in the organic matter plants need, and recycled irrigation adds salt over time. Lay a beautiful garden over that without preparing it, and the garden is fighting its own soil from day one. Preparing and, where needed, remediating the ground is not an optional extra; it is the foundation the rest of the softscape stands on.
A test establishes salinity, structure, drainage and nutrient status, which together tell you what will grow, what has to be improved, and how the irrigation should be set up. On an existing tired garden it tells you whether the decline is salt, drainage, compaction or something else, so the fix targets the cause rather than guessing. It turns a garden from a series of expensive experiments into a plan.
Depending on the result: improving the soil with organic matter and the right amendments so it holds nutrients and drains, correcting drainage so water and salt can move through rather than sit, breaking up compaction so roots can spread, and setting the irrigation to leach salt rather than let it build. On a plot brought to level with fill, the sub-base and its compaction matter too, because ground that settles takes the garden down with it.
We test the ground, prepare and remediate it properly, and only then plant, as one team, so the garden is built on something that will keep it alive rather than on hope. Under the Al Safat green building system, Dubai Municipality also expects efficient, sensor-controlled irrigation, which a well-prepared soil supports.
