Palms need less water than people assume and more attention than they get. In Dubai the three things that matter are correct trimming, feeding suited to sandy soil, and monitoring for red palm weevil, which is the pest most likely to kill a mature palm and the one most often noticed too late.
Over-trimming is the most common mistake we see in Dubai gardens. Cutting the crown back into a narrow point, sometimes called hurricane cutting, removes the fronds the palm relies on to feed itself and leaves it weakened and more vulnerable to pests. Correct practice removes only dead and clearly declining fronds, plus fruit stalks and old frond bases where required, keeping a full round crown. We also disinfect tools between palms, because pruning wounds are an entry route for both disease and weevil.
Red palm weevil is a serious and well-documented threat to palms in the UAE. Early signs are easy to miss: wilting or drooping central fronds, small holes in the trunk or crown with chewed fibre or oozing, and a faint fermenting smell. By the time the crown collapses the palm usually cannot be saved. Regular inspection is the only reliable defence, which is why we check for it on every visit rather than treating it as a separate service. Suspected infestations should be reported and treated promptly, and the relevant municipal guidance followed.
Dubai sand holds very little nutrient, and palms show deficiency clearly through yellowing and weak new growth. A balanced palm feed with magnesium and potassium at the right intervals makes a visible difference. On watering, established palms need deep, less frequent irrigation to the root zone rather than frequent light surface watering, which produces shallow roots that struggle in summer.
Tall palms need proper access equipment and trained climbers. This is genuinely hazardous work at height with cutting tools, near buildings, walls and pools. It is not a job for a general gardener with a ladder, and we would rather say so than have someone attempt it.
Most villa palms want trimming once or twice a year, feeding two to four times a year depending on species and soil, and an inspection at every routine garden visit. Community and commercial palm stock is usually best handled on a scheduled contract so nothing is missed.
