Why a waterfront garden in Palm Jumeirah is different

Living beside the water in Palm Jumeirah looks idyllic and behaves harshly on a garden. Salt-laden air corrodes pergola fixings, powder coating and outdoor structures faster than inland, and the humidity and reflected heat stress planting that would cope elsewhere. On reclaimed and lagoon-front plots the ground and drainage need care too. A waterfront garden that lasts is specified for salt from the start: marine-grade fixings on outdoor structures, corrosion-resistant finishes, salt-tolerant planting, and soil and drainage built to move salt rather than trap it.

The recycled-water reality

Like most large Dubai landscapes, gardens here are often irrigated with recycled TSE water, which carries more salt than tap water and concentrates it in the root zone under high evaporation. We choose salt-tolerant, adapted planting for Palm Jumeirah, prepare and drain the soil so salt can be flushed, and set the irrigation to leach rather than only wet the surface, so the garden stays healthy on the water it actually gets.

Authority requirements that can change

These come from the relevant authority but are revised from time to time. Treat them as a starting point and confirm the current position for your property before you rely on them.

What we typically see in the market

These are observations from working in Dubai, not rules. No authority publishes them as requirements, and your own contract or community may differ.
