Rooftop & Terrace Landscaping in Dubai

Rooftop landscaping in Dubai is mostly an engineering problem before it is a planting one. The three things that decide whether it lasts are the waterproofing membrane underneath, the drainage falls, and the weight the slab can carry. Get those right and the planting is straightforward. Get them wrong and the first summer storm shows up as a leak in the room below.

Why rooftops fail in Dubai

Almost every rooftop garden failure we are called to fix traces back to the same few causes. Planters placed directly onto the membrane, so it is punctured or permanently wet. Drainage outlets blocked by soil washing out of open beds. Falls that were fine for a bare roof but no longer work once decking sits on top. And weight: saturated soil is far heavier than dry soil, and a design signed off on dry weight can overload a slab after irrigation.

How we build it

• Protect the membrane first. We survey the existing waterproofing, repair it where needed, and lay a protection and drainage layer over it before anything else goes down.
• Keep the falls. Decking and paving sit on adjustable pedestals so water still runs to the outlets underneath rather than pooling.
• Contain the soil. Planting goes into contained beds or planters with their own drainage, so soil never reaches the roof outlets.
• Design for wind. Upper floors in Dubai Marina, JLT and Downtown get significant wind loading. Planters are weighted or fixed, and tall planting is chosen and positioned so it is not shredded by spring winds.
• Shade before seating. A rooftop with no shade is unusable eight months of the year, so shading is part of the layout from the start, not an afterthought.

What actually grows up there

Rooftops are hotter, windier and more exposed than ground level, and reflected heat off paving and parapets adds to it. Planting that copes tends to be tough and small-leaved: bougainvillea, oleander, frangipani, olive, date and areca palms in sheltered corners, and succulents and ornamental grasses in the most exposed positions. Broad, soft-leaved ornamentals generally do not survive a Dubai summer on an open roof.

Irrigation

Rooftop planting dries out faster than anything at ground level, so it needs its own automatic drip line with a controller, not hand watering. We run the supply and drainage during the build rather than surface-mounting it afterwards, which is both tidier and far less likely to be damaged.
